What is microseeds.org?
$50 to many Americans means very little...a meal out, a pair of sneakers, a full tank of gas, but to a widow in Rwanda, it can mean the difference between hope and despair.
Microseeds is a Christian microcredit ministry that provides small zero-interest loans to people living in extreme poverty, people who earn less than one dollar per day. Microseeds serves primarily widows and single mothers in Rwanda, Africa who are raising children in a nation devastated by war, genocide, poverty and HIV/AIDS. Microseeds works through the church in Rwanda to provide these loans, assisting the indigenous church in its ministry to care for the poor in Jesus name. Microseeds goal is empower the poor to help themselves and their families break grip of poverty.
What is microcredit?
Microcredit is simply providing a small loan to a person with the purpose of helping them start a business and generate an income. Microcredit is an effective means of alleviating poverty and improving the lives of the very poorest in the world.
What is distinctively Christian about Microseeds?
- Borrowers receive zero-interest loans. (Lenders pay the administrative cost, $50 principal + $10 administrative cost = $60 total).
- A Christian fellowship is formed with the borrowers. The borrowers meet weekly in small groups and in large group prayer meetings.
- Microseeds works with the Church in the developing world, empowering the witness and ministry of the Church by caring for the poor.
How does Microseeds work?
- You donate a $60 to a specific person in Rwanda for six months.
- They use that money to help build their family business.
- At the end of the six months the money is automatically used to fund another loan.
Who is Microseeds?
Microseeds.org is a ministry of Meme Stephens Ministries, a tax-exempt 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Microseeds began its work in January 2008 with our Rwandan ministry partner Africa Hope Microcredit. African Hope Microcredit is affiliated with the Harvest Churches in Rwanda, Congo and Burundi. The have 43 churches in their movement, and African Hope Microcredit is their microcredit ministry.
